Water in combination with other natural weathering elements such as heat, sunlight, snow, and rain can cause problems.  Wood, being a water-absorbing material, will increase in moisture content, causing it to swell. Drying conditions will cause this wood to release this moisture and shrink.  This constant expansion and contraction due to natural weather conditions causes wood cracking, splintering, warping, and twisting.

Pressure treated wood needs immediate and long lasting protection.

  • Periodic application of a quality clear water repellent or semi-transparent stain with water repellent will help minimize warping, checking, splitting, and other weathering problems.  Clear water repellent can be applied immediately to new pressure treated wood.

  • Semi-transparent stains with water repellent should be applied to new pressure treated wood as soon as the wood is surface dry.

How the dryness of the surface can be determined:

  • Sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface. If the water is rapidly absorbed by the wood, apply the semi-transparent stain with water repellent immediately.

  • If the water is not readily absorbed by the wood, wait a few days and then test again before applying the stain.

Western Wood Preserving Co. has a complete line of the highest quality wood protecting stains, water repellants, and cleaners.

Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations when applying clear water repellent or semi-transparent stain with water repellent.
